Will a Cheap Kitchen Cost You More in the Long-Run?
May 4, 2017
Are you building or renovating your kitchen? Do you have a tight budget that you’re trying to stick to? As you scour the net looking for tips and advice, is a cheap kitchen that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing high on your list of priorities?
For a lot of people, building a cheap kitchen is important, however, as with most things in life, when it comes to kitchens; you get what you pay for.
Building a cheap kitchen may be financially beneficial in the short run, however, cheap kitchen materials often require more maintenance, more repairs, and won’t last as long as their quality counterparts.
The kitchen is the hub of your home and has to withstand a lot, so when you’re designing your kitchen, make sure you don’t skimp on the following items.
When it comes to your kitchen’s functionality, quality appliances are essential! Your oven, fridge, dishwasher, and range hood are all permanent fixtures in your kitchen, and aren’t items you want to be replacing in a couple years time.
Repairs on heavy-duty appliances are expensive, so make sure you select items that have a proven track record and a good warranty. Before you make any large-scale purchases, check out product reviews online and read up on all of the product features and what they mean.
Also look for appliances that have good energy efficiency ratings, as they can help reduce your energy bill.
Your kitchen benchtop will take a bit of a beating over its lifetime. Whether heavy items get dropped on it, hot items put down on it, or harsh cleaning chemicals spilt on it – and that’s before the kids get in there – your benchtop has to withstand a lot!
Regardless of what material you choose for your benchtop, make sure it’s of a good quality, carries a decent warranty, is stain, heat and water-resistant and is easy to clean. Most types of stone benchtops, including Caesarstone and granite, will meet all of the above criteria and will also be aesthetically pleasing.
Cheap kitchen benchtops on the other hand will be more prone to chipping and cracking, and will need to be repaired or replaced more often, making them more expensive in the long-run.
Drawer and Hinge Hardware
Drawer and hinge hardware may not be something you’re looking at all of the time, and don’t offer much in terms of aesthetic appeal, however, a cheap hinge is more likely to rust, grow stiff over time, or break because it can’t handle the weight of your cupboards or drawers.
Soft closing hinges and drawers are also a good investment, despite the extra cost, because they can prevent excessive wear and tear on your cabinets and drawers and will eliminate the annoying sound of cupboards slamming.
If you want your kitchen to stand the test of time, the best thing you can do, apart from selecting quality materials, is to ensure it’s well-made.
Do a little research before you choose a supplier, and make sure they have good reviews online, offer good warranties, and have an excellent portfolio of past work.
